Prince Prototype Rackets For Trial 0n Tues 15 Dec

Visit www.princesquash.com for more racket details

Greg will be trying to bring a few prototype prince rackets down for us to try this coming Tuesday during our regular training session. Good chance to get a feel of what next generation prince rackets will feel like.
I have also asked him if he can get some special pricing for those of us who are keen on buying some of the current production models.
We will see what he can get. For those of you with specific prince models in mind, you can reply directly to this email and I will forward it to Greg to see if he can get pricing for the particular model.
See you guys on Tuesday afternoon at 4pm @ SIA Sports Club.

SSRA NSL Timeline

Players and Team Captains,

Please take note of the timeline listed below:

We have already submitted the appeals to reverse the proposed upgrading of Eng Kiat and Eric Yeow to the D2 grade. Results of the appeal are still pending.

Sometime near Christmas, the captains will be in touch by email to decide what teams to field this year and proceed with the paperwork.

By 15 Jan, all paperwork must be sent to SSRA. Sports Club will be notified of the exact amounts to pay SSRA and they will pay SSRA directly.

There will be a meeting on 21 Jan for the team captains at the SSRA appointed venue. We hope to appeal against the new ruling which prevents teams from postponing their games.

Court Defects - Glass Door

A friend who plays at SIA Sports Club pointed out that the glass door of Court 1 appears warped. It starts from the door knob area and end up about half an inch apart from the adjacent glass panel.

The club has been informed via email about this defect of the court and it might possibly be due to the heat from the setting sun which shines almost directly at this spot.

Water Damage To The Squash Courts

With the forecast of heavy rains till Jan, this is the ultimate test on the quality of the job done for the rectification works of the squash courts.

I had a brief chat with Kenny the other day. He says that there are signs that the war against the water seepage is not over yet.

Dear Squash Team House Captains,

The lineups as submitted by each captain are as follows. Tournament start date has yet to be confirmed by the club due to the courts WIP. However, based on the published draw and lineups, we can start preparing to play by contacting your respective opponents to arrange a good day to play.

We hope to have the courts available by mid Oct, two weeks later than I had hoped to start the tournament.
We should still try to complete them by end Nov.

Captains please arrange with Rosalind with regards to T-shirt collections. I will arrange for one box of squash balls to be issued to each captain for use during the tournament. Please distribute excess balls to your players for training use.

Thanks

SIA - Singapore Swimming Club Bilateral Games 01 Nov 2009

SIA won 4-1. Thanks everyone who made the effort to play, we had our best line up ever with the top players in town on the same day.

Feed back from both visiting and home players is that the courts are in very good condition and we should make full use of them. We will try and arrange more friendlies in the coming months.

We also noticed that the evening sun shines into both courts at about 5-6 pm. We should let the club know to see if anything can be done to block the sun shining into the courts.

[21 July]

I have been informed by club management that it will be another 3-4 weeks before the courts are ready. They are ensuring that the contractors do a 100% job this time round. I am sure we all can wait a bit longer and hope our courts will be 100% water proof this time round.

[4th Sep]
I received an email from the Sports Club Facilities Executive, Kenny Lim, that they have just gotten confirmation from the contractor on the waterproofing works and are proceeding with the painting of the court. Courts will remain closed till the end of September.

Point-A-Rally to 11 wef 1 April 2009

Of all the changes in WSF rules, the point a rally to 11 is the most significant. I suggest that the club formally accepts this in both bilateral games and in house tournaments from henceforth to be aligned with WSF rules.

Let Please ........errr what should I do as a referee

This is a good write up about what a referee should consider when somone asks for a let

I suggest that every player should print and keep a copy of this and keep in your squash bag so that you can refer to it with regards to the award of LETs and STROKES and the rule about TURNING.

New Rules at WSF website

Please visit the WSF website for some updates on rules:

Rule 17

Know your rights as a competent referee in managing unruly players:

This is the link to a PDF copy of a summary of rule 17.

It is reproduced here for ease of reference:

Guidelines for the Application of Rule 17 (Conduct on Court)

Rule 17 mandates that in the event of unacceptable behaviour on court the Referee ”shall penalise the
player.” However, the severity of the offence and the nature of the penalty are left to the discretion of
the Referee. This has led over the years frequently to the imposition of different penalties (or none at
all) for similar offences, depending on who is refereeing. On the one hand, a harsh (inappropriate)
penalty might be assessed for a single or mild offence; while on the other hand, a serious offence is
penalized lightly, or not at all. The players do not know in advance what standards will be applied, and
the referees are left individually to set their own standards.

The development of these Guidelines is an attempt to bring some order to the existing chaos, and to
offer both referees and players some guidance on the application of Rule 17. If referees follow these
Guidelines fairly closely, then players will know in advance what the standards are in relation to Rule
17. This is, in effect, no different from the desirability of knowing what the standards are for the
application of the rules concerning interference: a greater measure of consistency is the aim. The
achievement of such consistency will greatly benefit the sport of squash.

Referees will apply the following Guidelines in the appropriate circumstances. While the Referee under
Rule 17 retains discretion in deciding whether or not there has been an offence under that Rule, once
the Referee has decided that an offence has occurred, the following actions must be taken:

Abuse of equipment (racket or ball or other equipment):
Minor offence (e.g. throwing the racket onto to floor after losing a game, hitting the ball hard after
the rally is over): Conduct Warning
Major offence (e.g. deliberately breaking the racket; smashing the racket against the wall; hitting
the ball or throwing the racket out of the court): Conduct Stroke

Audible or Visible Obscenity:
Minor offence (e.g. muttered expletive; blaspheming): Conduct Warning
Major offence (e.g. audible obscenity): Conduct Stroke

Time-wasting
Minor offence (e.g. a few seconds late back on court; taking excessive time to serve): Conduct
Warning
Major offence (e.g. very late back on court; prolonged discussion with Referee): Conduct Stroke

Dissent:
Minor offence (e.g. questioning a decision): Conduct Warning
Major offence (e.g. prolonged or repeated questioning of or disagreement with decisions): Conduct
Stroke

Abuse of Official:
Minor offence (e.g. unflattering comments about official or decisions): Conduct Warning
Major offence (e.g. pejorative comments about official or decisions): Conduct Stroke
Severe offence (e.g. hitting ball at official or into spectators; throwing racket at official or into
spectators): Conduct Game or Match (depending on the severity of the offence and the danger
caused)

Excessive physical contact:
Minor offence (e.g. running into the opponent): Conduct warning
Major offence (e.g. physical abuse of the opponent): Conduct Stroke
Severe offence (e.g. deliberately injuring the opponent; dangerous play that injures the
opponent): Conduct Game or Match (depending on the severity of the offence and the extent
of the injury caused)

Unsporting conduct:
Minor offence (e.g. making negative comments to the opponent): Conduct Warning
Major offence (e.g. repeated negative or pejorative comments to the opponent; any attempt at
intimidation of the opponent): Conduct Stroke
Severe offence (e.g. extreme behaviour that brings the game into disrepute): Conduct Game or
Match (depending on the severity of the offence)

Coaching:
First occurrence: Conduct Warning
Second occurrence: Conduct Stroke and expulsion of offending person
Repeated and excessive bad conduct:

When, in the Referees opinion, the player is guilty of repeated acts of unacceptable conduct on
court following the imposition of the penalties outlined above, the Referee may impose for the
next occurrence of the offence either the same penalty for the second offence or a more severe
penalty than the one already imposed. However, if a Conduct Warning has been given for both the
first and the second offences, for the third offence of a similar nature a Conduct Stroke must be
applied. (Example: If a player has received a Conduct Warning for Dissent, on the next occurrence
of this offence, either a Conduct Warning or a Conduct Stroke may be imposed. On the third
occurrence, however, a Conduct Stroke is mandatory.)

Sticky Residue From The Walls

There has been occasions in the past where the squash balls get a white sticky layer after a game at the courts. This has been traced to the cleaners using Jif to remove the black ball marks on the wall and not washing away the Jif later.

I have brought this to the attention to the club and as of Monday this week when we had the E grade league game, there was no trace of the sticky residue on the squash balls after play.

Anyone who notices the recurrence the white residue, please let me know, so that we can bring it up to the club again.

Thanks

Jeremy

Club Players 2009 (Work In Progress)

Once we have finalised our league teams and submitted them to SSRA, the list of club players for 2009 will be posted here.

Annual Report and Budget 2009

The committee is in the process of submitting the Annual Report and Budget for 2009. If you have any inputs for the annual report or the budget, please contact Jeremy.

SSRA National Squash League Final Results For 2008

The final results of last year's league season can be found at SSRA's website.
Our D grade team came in 7th out of 11 teams while our F Grade team came in 13th out of 18 teams

NSL 2009 will commence in Feb 2009. We have submitted 2 teams this year:

The E Grade team and a Veterans team.

As most of our active players are ranked in the E grade, it makes more sense to field a strong E grade team rather than a weak D grade team. Moreover, our active F grade players have also been promoted to the E grade this year.

This year will also be the first time in many years that we will be fielding a Veterans team. Most of our E grade players will also be able to play in the Veterans team.

E grade games will be on Mondays and Veterans games will be on Friday.
